Florence Nightingale

Nightingale House is named after Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910). She was born in Florence, Italy, on 12th May 1820. During the Crimean War, she and a team of nurses improved the unsanitary conditions at a British base hospital, reducing the death count by two thirds. Her writings sparked worldwide healthcare reform. In 1860 she established St Thomas’ Hospital, now a large NHS teaching hospital in Central London, which incorporated the Nightingale Training School for Nurses.

Florence was an accomplished mathematician and had a skill for classifying, analysing and documenting data. She invented an early form of pie chart, which she used to show comparisons of the major causes of mortality among soldiers. She was the first woman to be elected a Fellow of the Statistical Society. She was also the first woman to be awarded the Freedom of the City of London, which she received in 1909, the year before her death. She died on 13th August 1910, in London.

Our Chosen Charity

Nightingale House has adopted Age UK as its House Charity. The charity was suggested by students, and shortlisted to find the most popular charity for the house

Age UK aims to make later life as enjoyable as possible. This is done by providing facilities for older people to help increase their freedom. It is funded by campaigns and research, meaning that our charity events can help a typically ‘ignored’ age group, which will benefit all of us in later life.

Over the year, we will be fundraising for Age UK by holding cake sales and other events to help raise lots of money for our new House Charity!
