Introducing Curie House! Click here to see just a few of our activities.

We support the charity Marie Curie Cancer Care and regularly hold cake sales and charity events to raise funds for this worthy cause. We are also proud to have the only House vegetable garden which Year 7 students plant up in spring and tend throughout the summer term.

We have a wonderful mascot – Curiosity the Cat who supports all our sporting events and always makes a wonderful appearance at the school’s Sports Day. We have some excellent sportswomen in Curie and celebrate all the achievements of those girls who competed on Sports Day.

Marie Curie

Curie House is named after Marie Curie (1867 – 1934), a famous scientist who identified the radioactive properties of elements, such as thorium, and coined the word ‘radioactive’. She was a pioneer in the research that led to the use of radiotherapy to treat cancer.

She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 (shared with her husband Pierre, and Henri Becquerel, another scientist) for her work in radiation. She was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911, for her discovery of the elements radium and polonium. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to win two Nobel Prizes, and the only woman to win one in two different sciences.

Our Chosen Charity

Marie Curie Cancer Care is our charity. All our fundraising activities supports the work of their volunteers and nurses who care for terminally ill patients. Curie House has raised hundreds of pounds through the Daffodil Appeal.

This year we are hoping to raise funds by starting a regular charity book swap as well as our usual very successful bake sale, and have other exciting ideas in the pipeline.
