The focus of Austen House is pushing ourselves and preparing for the future. Every Austen girl from every year should be pushing themselves, trying new activities and challenges whether this be within the classroom or interhouse activities. There is something for everyone to be getting involved in. Participation is key to Austen’s success!

Jane Austen

Austen House is named after Jane Austen (1775 – 1817), one of the best-known and most widely-read novelists in the English language. Jane was born on 16th December 1775 in Steventon, Hampshire. Now famous for works such as Pride and Prejudice and Emma, she received little recognition during her lifetime as her novels were published anonymously. However her popularity during this and the last century has grown, with many non-readers now recognising her name through numerous film and television adaptations of her work. Her portrait is currently featured on the Bank of England £10 note!

Jane died on 18th July 1817 in Winchester, aged 41, and is buried in Winchester Cathedral because her family had strong ties to the church – her father and two brothers were clergymen.

Jane Austen was also a keen advocate for women’s rights and helped to inspire many women through the use of heroines in her books.

Our Chosen Charity

The chosen charity for Austen House is Demelza Hospice Care for Children, who do amazing work providing care and support to children with a life limiting illness across Kent and the South East. Austen House have raised money for Demelza over a number of years participating in many different fund-raising events. Representatives from the charity have visited the school to thank the students for the money they have donated and to explain how the money raised is spent.
