OUR VALUES
& ETHOS
We believe that education is not for students but for the adults they will become. We follow a Character Development Programme which encourages young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.

We encourage our students to reach their full potential both in their academic and personal progress throughout their time at school and to follow the values everyday whether they are in school or out.

We started our Character Development programme to help to achieve our mission by embedding the values within the curriculum and daily lessons. Our strategy is an integral part of our school, equipping children with the vital skills they need for secondary school and adult life. We believe that every child can reach their potential and our caring and dedicated staff will allow them to achieve this. Students should become valuable and fully rounded members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background.

We have an extensive safeguarding team, which is overseen by Mrs L Devaney, and is made up of a variety of professionals who are well trained in support for emotional health and wellbeing in all its forms. We endeavour to ensure that all of our students are supported and listened to, as well as offering extended support to our students’ families if and when needed. Our approach to safeguarding all of our students is constantly reviewed, developed and updated to ensure that we are offering the best level of support.

In short, the care we offer our students is genuine and thorough and is a priority to every member of staff here, not just the safeguarding team.

MENTAL HEALTH
Within school, we have several mental health first aiders that are able to offer informal counselling to our students, as well as a variety of support groups and interventions to encourage good mental health and support mechanisms for a variety of issues.
Some other emotional health support initiatives in place across our school are:
-
A relevant and regularly reviewed approach to form times and personal development lessons.
-
Support from external agencies to help give a well-rounded approach to mental health and safeguarding issues.
-
Wellbeing assemblies focusing on a range of topics and subjects.
-
Regular mental health workshops (working on anxiety, low mood and exam stress).
-
Parental Workshops (see links on the school website).
-
One-to-one sessions with our school counsellor.
-
Workshops with our Family Liaison Officer.
We also offer support in school for social skills, ELSA (emotional literacy support assistance), anger management, ALUMINA self harm support, as well as working with external agencies such as Holding On and Letting Go bereavement services, Open Road substance misuse support, Young Carers and the Medway Children’s Safeguarding Partnership to ensure that as much support as possible is accessible to our young people and families.

SAFEGUARDING AND VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL
Upon arrival at the school, visitors are required to sign in at main Reception located on Walderslade Road. They must then wear an ID badge (that must be visible at all times).

Visitors are collected from Reception and must remain with a designated member of staff at all times and will wear a red lanyard.
Those who have had the appropriate checks and work with students weekly will wear a yellow visitor lanyard.
On departure, visitors must sign out and return their ID badge to Reception before leaving the premises.

ANTI-BULLYING
The Walderslade & Greenacre Schools’ Partnership takes all reported incidents of bullying seriously. Students have a range of ways that they can report concerns of bullying: speak to a trusted adult in school, a parent/carer can report their daughter/son/ward’s concerns to the Pastoral team, or students and parents/carers can use our ‘Red Button’ facility.

The Red Button can be found at the bottom of all WGSP pages. The Red Button is a means for students/parents/carers to report concerns of bullying. The report can be done anonymously or, should you wish to be provided with an update into the investigation, you can provide contact details when completing your on-line log so that the Pastoral team can contact you. The Red Button facility is monitored by three members of staff and the five Heads of Year – the logs are not publicly visible.

WGSP does not tolerate bullying – there is no place for it in our school – we strive to provide a nurturing, caring and collaborative school environment and any students found to not be adhering to these needs, and purposefully targeting other student(s) will be sanctioned, however the education of all parties involved will always be our first priority.

Through our school values and other means, we aim to educate all our students on anti-bullying. Ways in which educate our students on anti-bullying are:
-
Kindness Week
-
National Anti-bullying Week
-
Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
-
Diana Award Training
-
Regular assemblies
-
Form time material
Parents can help support the WGSP, and our crusade against bullying, by actively monitoring their daughter/son/ward’s social media footprint. Incidents of bullying can often ‘spill’ into outside of school time via: the sending of unkind messages, videos, general on-line harassment etc. In these incidents, we ask that parents/carers actively monitor their daughter/son/ward’s use of social media and help us to champion the proponent of kindness.
