Key Stage 3
Pupils will build on the work done by the sports partnership and embed the physical development and skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, becoming more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and apply them across different sports and physical activities.
They will learn to understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others’ work. They should develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.
Pupils will be taught to:
- use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, softball, rugby and table tennis]
- develop their technique and improve their performance in other competitive sports [for example, athletics and gymnastics]
- analyse their performances compared to previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
- take part in competitive sports and activities outside school through community links or sports clubs
Key Stage 4
NCFE VCERT in Health and Fitness
All students begin to study this Level 2 award. VCert Technical Awards are vocational courses which hold performance points and are recognised in the Progress 8 measure.
This qualification is designed for learners who want an introduction to health and fitness that includes a vocational and project-based element. The qualification will appeal to learners who wish to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector or progress to further study.
Students will learn how to:
- understand and identify the main body systems and their functions
- understand the principles of training and FITT
- explore how physical activities affect the body in the short and long term
- understand how relevant fitness tests can be used for specific health and skill components of fitness
- understand different lifestyle analysis tools and how to apply them
- create a health and fitness programme.
Assessment:
- Synoptic assessment – 60% of the technical award.
The synoptic project will assess the learner’s ability to effectively draw together their knowledge, understanding and skills from across the whole vocational area.
The synoptic project will be externally set by NCFE, internally graded by the centre and externally quality assured by NCFE. Learners will have one opportunity to resubmit.
- 40% of the technical award. Written examination:
- 80 marks
- 1 hour 30 minutes
- a mixture of multiple-choice, short answer and extended response questions.

Learners who achieve at Level 2 might consider progression to Level 3 qualifications post-16 such as, Level 3 Applied Generals in:

A Level in Physical Education and Sport. This will support progression to higher education. Learners could also progress into employment or onto an apprenticeship.
Key Stage 5 The BTEC Level 3
BTEC Sport enables learners to study the world of Sport and Sport Science in different ways. Learners will engage in both theoretical and practical lessons to prepare for both exams and the submission of coursework. The course is designed to engage, enthuse, challenge and stimulate discussion. Learners will explore not only physiological aspects in sport but psychological aspects. These are related to the working environment to support our learners in their chosen careers.
Students can choose to undertake the BTEC course as either a single or double subject. Both BTEC lines include compulsory exams. These include anatomy and physiology and fitness training and programming. If learners decide to follow the extended curriculum pathway they will also sit development and provision of sport and business in sport and the active leisure industry.

Football Academy:
We run a football academy alongside our broad sixth-form academic programme. The football programme is led by Mr R Edge, ex professional footballer. Students will train each day and are timetabled to fit around academic lessons. Weekly league games are played on Wednesday afternoons. Alongside this program students must study 3 A levels or equivalent.
After school clubs:
Football, Rugby, Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Cricket, Athletics, Trampolining, Dodgeball and Softball.
