INTENT

“The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence and Growth”

At the Walderslade and Greenacre Schools Partnership our curriculum is designed to inspire, challenge, and support all students to achieve their full potential. Our intent is to provide a broad and balanced education that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world.

At WGSP we recognise the transformative impact of literacy and are committed to nurturing a lifelong passion for reading. We understand that literacy enriches academic performance, bolsters mental well-being, and expands cultural awareness, all while fostering strong character development.

Our School Values of respect, resilience and aspiration are central to everything we do, incorporated in a curriculum that builds leadership and independence in our students. Careers advice and guidance is embedded throughout our curriculum. Our Personal Development lessons are designed to prepare students for life beyond school, either for work, apprenticeships or higher education. This enables our students to be valued members of the community and have the life skills to ensure that they are not only successful in the workplace, but live happy and full personal lives.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our curriculum, from Year 7 through to Year 13 is wide-ranging and aspirational. Students are at the centre of our curriculum and at the forefront of the decisions we make. We understand that every student is unique and has different goals and future life aspirations. Our Key Stage 3 curriculum builds on the knowledge and skills from primary school and prepares our students for successful outcomes at both GCSE, and A Level. At WGSP, the Arts, Sport, and Design Technology are highly valued and contribute to the development of well-rounded individuals. Our curriculum reflects the WGSP values of aspiration, respect, and resilience, aiming to nurture ambitious learners who are equipped to face challenges with confidence and integrity.

Our Heads of Department thoughtfully plan learning sequences that enable students to develop a deep understanding across a wide range of subjects. The curriculum is both diverse and challenging, building knowledge and understanding over time and aims to inspire all students to think more deeply. Teaching is underpinned by the core WGSP Teaching Strands which ensure that every lesson includes high level questioning, modelling, challenge and retrieval.

KS3

Our Key Stage 3 curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation for students’ academic, personal, and social development. It aims to nurture well-rounded, inquisitive individuals with a broad knowledge base and essential skills that will serve as the building blocks for their future educational journey. The curriculum is focused on fostering a deep understanding across a range of subjects, encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Through a varied and inclusive curriculum, we aim to inspire students to become lifelong learners who are curious, respectful, and prepared for the challenges of the modern world. The curriculum is structured to build on prior learning while introducing more complex concepts as students progress.

KS4

Our Key Stage 4 curriculum is designed to be aspirational and student-centred, focusing on personal development and preparing students for diverse career paths. We aim to inspire students to achieve their full potential by offering a broad range of subjects allowing students to pursue their interests and strengths. This is continued into the WGSP Sixth Form, where students can specialise even further in preparation for their next steps into higher education or the world of work.

Our Key Stage 4 curriculum builds on the skills and knowledge gained across Key Stage 3 and maintains the diversity and individualism we value. During the options process in Year 9, students can choose from a range of subjects which complement their personal interests and ambitions. This ensures an effective and rounded educational experience and prepares our students for the future. Through a supportive and inclusive environment, we encourage students to set high aspirations and take ownership of their own learning journey.

KS5

Our Key Stage 5 curriculum is designed to provide students with an advanced level of academic and vocational education that prepares them for further education, employment, and adult life. Our intent is to equip students with the necessary knowledge, critical thinking skills, and personal development required to thrive in the competitive and ever-changing world beyond school. The curriculum focuses on deepening subject expertise, fostering independence, encouraging research and inquiry, and developing strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills. The curriculum is tailored to each student’s aspirations and intended pathways, whether they are planning to continue with academic studies, take up an apprenticeship, or enter the workforce.

IMPACT

At WGSP, the impact of our curriculum is measured not only in terms of academic achievement but also in the development of confident, resilient, and respectful young people who aspire to reach their full potential.

Our students leave WGSP with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills across a broad range of subjects. They are well-prepared for the next stage of their education, training, or employment, equipped with the qualifications and character needed to succeed.

The success of our curriculum is evident in the positive destinations of our students, their increasing independence as learners, and their ability to reflect, adapt, and thrive in a rapidly changing world.

PERSONAL
DEVELOPMENT

STATEMENT OF INTENT

At WGSP, our educational philosophy revolves around nurturing every student’s growth and potential. We believe in providing a supportive environment where learning goes beyond textbooks and exams, focusing on the well-rounded development of each individual.

In the realm of Personal Development, we strive to instil confidence, resilience, and a solid foundation for physical and mental well-being. Our approach involves meaningful outreach programs, cultural experiences, and events that encourage students to discover their unique strengths. We prioritise ensuring that every student’s voice is not only heard but also valued and respected.

Our careers programme stands as a testament to our commitment to student aspiration. Tailored for each year group, it is a robust and unbiased roadmap guiding our students towards making informed choices about their futures. Whether it’s further education, employment, or training, we pride ourselves on nurturing students who are not just outstanding in their professional pursuits, but are also equipped with a versatile skill set adaptable to the dynamic demands of the world.

Values form the core of our educational ethos, emphasising respect, responsibility, and tolerance. We aspire to cultivate citizens who appreciate the importance of democracy, liberty, and the rule of law. Our students become ambassadors of these values, contributing positively to their communities.

Equality, opportunity, and diversity are not just concepts but practices embedded in our ethos. Through cultural focus days, a celebration of diverse events, and engagement with a wide range of perspectives, we provide a fertile ground for our students to understand, appreciate, and respect differences. Discrimination finds no place in our institution, as we foster an environment of inclusivity and mutual respect.

Our co-curricular strategy is designed to ensure that every WGSP student is exposed to a diverse and inclusive curriculum. This not only broadens their horizons but also hones their skills as independent and resilient learners. We are committed to nurturing students who articulate their views with clarity and respect, and who are prepared to take on leadership roles at various stages of their educational journey.

At WGSP, education is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s about nurturing enlightened and well-rounded individuals who will contribute positively to society. As our students progress through their educational journey, they embody the values and skills that will serve them well as adults, ready to make their mark on the world.

PURPLE
TEAM

“Stretching Potential at WGSP”

At The Walderslade & Greenacre Schools Partnership, we are dedicated to supporting our most able students through the Purple Team initiative. This group consists of students who have been identified as our ‘higher attainers’… those who have the potential to achieve top grades at GCSE. To help them excel, we provide tailored tasks and challenges designed to stretch their abilities and encourage deeper learning.

Below, you’ll find a list of tasks and suggestions specifically created to challenge Purple Team members. These tasks aim to push them beyond their comfort zones, deepen their understanding, develop their critical thinking skills, and inspire them to reach their full potential.

Students in the Purple Team are encouraged to mark their progress/extension tasks with purple highlighters and proudly wear their purple badges, symbolising their commitment to high achievement. We believe that by offering continuous stretch and challenge opportunities, we can help our students surpass expectations and achieve their very best.

HOMEWORK

Homework is an essential part of a child’s education. We at WGSP believe that homework plays a crucial role in the educational development of our young people. Homework serves as an extension to regular classroom practice, providing students with the opportunity to reinforce concepts, practice key skills and develop effective study skills such as independence. Homework should be meaningful for the student and manageable for the teacher.

Homework at WGSP will look like the following:

KEY STAGE 3
  • Students complete regular online quizzes based on Knowledge Organisers. Quizzes are compulsory for all students to complete

  • Quizzes will be set every Monday by a variety of subjects. There is no fixed rota. We encourage students to create their own homework schedule to ensure they meet all deadlines.

  • Students must complete the quiz in the time provided. Deadlines will be made explicit.

  • All quizzes will be set via Microsoft Teams. Students and parents will be able to view them as soon as they have been set by the subject teacher.

  • Love for Learning tasks are provided and encouraged by all departments. Completion of this optional element of the homework policy and will be rewarded.

KEY STAGE 4
  • Students are to complete between 30-90 minutes of homework per fortnight in each subject.

  • Homework may look different in different subjects (some subjects may use online quizzes; some subjects may require extended writing).

KEY STAGE 5
  • Students are to complete 5 hours a fortnight of homework and independent study in each subject.

  • Much like KS4, homework could look different depending on the subject area.

EXTRA-
CURRICULAR

Extracurricular clubs play a crucial role in fostering personal growth and development beyond the confines of the traditional classroom setting. They offer students the opportunity to explore their interests, develop new skills and engage in meaningful social interactions. Through these activities, students can build leadership qualities, enhance their teamwork abilities and learn the value of commitment and responsibility.

In addition to individual benefits, extracurricular activities foster a sense of community and belonging. They encourage students to connect with peers who share similar interests, thereby creating a supportive network that can enhance their social well-being and academic performance. This sense of belonging can be especially beneficial for students who may struggle with social integration or face challenges in other areas of their lives.
